Grenada's PM Thomas addresses UN Conference

The United Nations has convened a three-day summit of world leaders from 24 to 26 June 2009 at its New York Headquarters to assess the worst global economic downturn since the Great Depression.

The aim is to identify emergency and long-term responses to mitigate the impact of the crisis, especially on vulnerable populations, and initiate a needed dialogue on the transformation of the international financial architecture, taking into account the needs and concerns of all Member States.

The United Nations summit of world leaders was mandated at the Follow-up International Conference on Financing for Development, held in December 2008 in Doha, Qatar.

Member States requested the General Assembly President Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann to organize the meeting “at the highest level”.

Regional Broadcaster urges for quality programming

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, May 2 - The quality of programming content and the limited advertising pool are some of the challenges facing regional broadcasters, according to General Manager of the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC), Errol Clarke.

Speaking on Friday at the Caribbean Media and Communication Conference in Guyana, Clarke said that content is one of the hardest things to get for a regional channel and there are not many sources which create quality content.

However, the CMC official believes that the creation of a viable Pan-Caribbean Media Business is very possible, citing the progress made with CMC's flagship television programme, Caribvision which is also beamed to an international audience.

GFA told to develop the sport at all levels

The newly elected executive of the Grenada Football Association (GFA) should work to ensure that football is developed at all levels, according to two local sports journalists.

Ray Roberts and Michael Bascombe, who combined more than half a century of sports reporting, believe that the "Ram" Folkes administration has a platform to develop on the many missed opportunities over the past four years.

Ram Folkes promises to restore football's 'credibility'

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada - Re-elected President of the Grenada Football Association (GFA) Ashley "Ram" Folkes has promised to restore the credibility of football under his new tenure.

Folkes, speaking on Sunday Sports, said that football in Grenada needs a fundamental change, with the development of football at schools and the communities.

He said that more competition and organisation are important facets for the development of the sport.

Folkes won the presidency 17-16, defeating former vice president Cheney Joseph in a second run off following a first round deadlock.

The new executive reads: Folkes (President), Marlon Glean (1st VP), Adrian "Spaceman" Mitchell (2nd VP),and Directors - Carl Phillip, Bernadine Andrews, Jester Noel, Wayne James and Phillip James.

Joseph chides GFA for failing to discuss AGM

Vice President of the Grenada Football Association, Cheney Joseph has criticised his association for failing to convene an executive meeting to discuss the upcoming Annual General Meeting which includes the election of new officers.

Mr. Joseph, who is one of three candidates seeking the presidency of the GFA at Saturday's AGM, said that while the date for the AGM is known there are many aspects that need clarifications.

Mr. Joseph is also concerned about the announcement by the GFA's General Secretary, Victor Daniel that representatives of FIFA and CONCACAF will be in attendance at the AGM.

"If you are not sick you don't call the doctor," Joseph said.

The incumbent Ashley "Ram" Folkes and Paul Roberts are the other candidates contesting for the presidency.

FIFA & CONCACAF Reps for GFA's Elections

General Secretary of the Grenada Football Association (GFA) Victor Daniel says that all systems are in place for Saturday's Annual General Meeting of the association.

The highpoint of the AGM will be the election of new officers to run the affairs of the GFA for the next four years.

According to Mr. Daniel, the Returning Officer will be the President of the Grenada Olympic Committee (GOC), Roystan La Hee, and he will be assisted by the former deputy supervisor of elections, Emmanuel Roberts, who is also an executive member of the GOC.

He said both FIFA and CONCACAF will be sending representatives to attend Saturday's AGM.

Brian Alleyne wants collective approach for Magistracy

Former Acting Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, Brian Alleyne said the regionalisation of the magistracy in the OECS is crucial for the integration of the sub-region.

Mr. Alleyne, who made a short presentation at Wednesday's launch of the year-long public consultation for the establishment of an economic union, said the OECS will have to overcome deeply entrenched constitutional provisions to deal with that issue.

He is recommending the integration of the Magistracy into the supreme court structure.
